Title: Rivalries
Fandom: The Dark Knight (Nolanverse)/Sandman crossover. Yes, I've cracked.
Pairing/Characters: Batman/Joker, nearly all of the Endless
Rating: PG-13/R
Notes: As with The Dreams of Others, I'm once again compelled to see what an injection of graphic-novel influence will do to the Nolanverse. Granted, the Endless are not going to be interacting with anybody directly; this story's more an exploration of what meddling they might be doing just beyond the fabric of reality. It seems to me that the Endless would take a keen interest in such an epic struggle as this one (or passing interest, depending on which one of them we're talking about). This time, my apologies are not only to Dave McKean, but also to Neil Gaiman. Sir, I worship the 'net you blog on; you'd have my head for the Good Omens infractions alone.
Summary: Kindred is as kindred does, and humans aren't any different.

I. Twins

Revolving mirrors: there may be two, or there may be four. For now, consider it two, but know that each of them has two faces. Of each of these, only one is a window.

Desire takes great pleasure in watching humans apply make-up. For as often as its own face is painted, most humans make the gesture seem redundant, daily, meaningless. This man, however - this man that Desire stands watching, arms wound around itself in terse angles of pleasure - makes the gesture seem a ritual, ablution, benediction. His tongue flicks out at intervals, tentative, and the dark eyes widen with critical, expressive severity. The hollows beneath his eyebrows aren't dark enough, and the ensuing assault of the mascara brush is calculated, careful, anything but random. And then his fists grind in, and flickers of sheer pleasure swim before Desire's golden stare. Whatever else he may be, this man is an artist.

Beside Desire, a disgruntled growl erupts from Despair's raw throat.

Her mirror reflects an image that seems almost disconnected, irrelevant: a shirtless, haggard young man of about thirty sits collapsed in an office chair before a meaningless display of monitors. The chair is badly out of place, for the room in which he sits is not an office. In fact, it is not a room at all, and Despair, despite the sounds she is making, is enjoying the scenery. Every so often, the image in the mirror pans to the cavernous ceiling above the young man's head, and bats swoop this way and that, chittering without cease. Despair's eyes move back to the young man, whose neck and shoulders are covered with livid bruises. He swivels the chair so that she can see him in profile, doubling over on himself with a silent groan. Even in profile, his features radiate exhaustion. A moment later, he straightens up and turns back to the monitors, his face reflected back in lines of grim determination.

Revolving mirrors: there may be two, there may be four, or there may be none at all.

II. Brothers

"He has chosen his path," said Destiny, idly flipping pages. "Or perhaps it has chosen him. One can never be clear on these things. What's done is done."

Destruction shifted from foot to foot - before too long, he'd need new hiking boots - and idly peered over his brother's shoulder. He had hoped they wouldn't spend the entire visit, as rare an occasion as it was, poring over that God-forsaken old tome. Destiny, it seemed, had other things on his mind: a mortal by the name of Bruce Wayne and a force of devastation clothed in human flesh.

"Why these two?" Destruction asked, keeping his tone cheerful. "Do they amuse you?"

"No," Destiny admitted, his voice as flat and placid as always, "but they interest me. It is not often that two mortals with such strong senses of...purpose revolve into the same orbit. They have occupied these pages, and I have been content to read them."

"You mean read your book, you daft fool," Destruction muttered affectionately.

"I mean precisely what I say," replied Destiny, shrugging. His cowl seemed to hang lower, more ominous than usual. Abruptly, one thin, reedy finger shot out from the edge of the page, pointing and retaining its grasp all at once. "Do you see?"

"Of course I see," Destruction laughed, a rumbling that reverberated off the towering statues around them. "My money's on the clown, just you wait!"

Destiny shrugged again and switched direction in his eternal pacing.

III. Companions

Just a girl and her dog: there are no two ways about it. The girl might be a young woman, and the dog might be an old man. Don't think too hard about this one.

Most nights, they sit in a vast meadow in the middle of nowhere out beneath the stars. Delirium's mind, ever-restless, conjures a constellation of multi-colored comets: these are the fireworks that she had so dearly hoped to see. They would have been beautiful. Spellbinding. Bang. People-parts in a pretty dead rainbow across the sky!

Beside her, the dog whines and covers its eyes with both paws.

But what it might have said was, "Not this again." But you know that dogs can't speak.

"I dunno," Delirium says, almost thoughtfully, flipping a wild, fire-engine curl out of her mismatched eyes. "It might have been very nice for him. Ummm. The one that doesn't know how to have a good time. You know! Bats in the belfry." She illustrates by fluttering her hands on either side of her head, sporting an impish grin.

"This is a good example of why dumb dogs devote their lives to people."

"Well, I'm not a person. At least not today. I might be...I don't know, a...a cricket. Or a telephone jack. Or a piece of pumpkin pie. Or - "

The fireworks crescendo in a hiss of terrible laughter. Delirium shivers and reaches for Barnabas, pulling him close. Exasperated, he twists his head and licks her nose.

"I miss my brother," she whispers, and does not say which one.

IV. Lovers

"Of course I do," said Death, folding her arms across her chest. The ankh rattled.

"Because it would seem to me," Daniel said, carefully, moving one of his black pawns forward two squares, "that you're the deepest in denial of them all."

"In denial about what? That this isn't going to end well? Oh, no, believe me: it won't." She unfolded her arms and made straight for her remaining white bishop, knocking out Daniel's pawn in one fluid motion. "Humans in stupid costumes with access to complicated equipment and a lot of explosives are usually a recipe for disaster."

"And there you'll be," mused Daniel, leaning back and steepling his fingers. "Spreading wide your arms to welcome them home. Do you think they want oblivion?"

Death narrowed her eyes at him. "Just move already!"

Daniel clucked his tongue. "You didn't answer my question."

"I think they want each other, but never mind. If you don't get your skinny ass in gear, I'll - "

Daniel leaned forward and moved his knight into position, smirking.

"God, I hate you," said Death, moving her queen out of harm's way to no avail. "I really hate you. And have I mentioned you're an even bigger jerk than he was?"

"You've mentioned many things," said Daniel, his fingers poised over the knight. "Shall I retreat and spare you? As mercifully, perhaps, as you're sparing them?"

Death was glaring at him now, her pale hands fisted at the corners of the table.

"Temper temper," said Daniel, smiling coolly, and took her queen with his rook.

I want a Sandman film, period - on the condition that it's well-cast and well-done. If they do one and it turns out to be shite, I'll be so angry.

Thank you!

I'm not at all familiar with the Endless... but I still followed this quite easily. Very interesting concept, I love that such beings would take interest in Batman and Joker's eternal struggle. And I thought you brought the characters to life and made it pretty effortless for me to follow despite not knowing the 'verse. Wonderful :)

I was already going to love you forever. But now, I really think that I will love you forever.

When I first read the Sandman, I knew absolutely nothing about Batman. I recently just re-read Preludes and Nocturnes, and I spazzed out. Morpheus in Arkham! Morpheus in Arkham! This means that Morpheus and the Joker or Morpheus and Bruce could meet up. And I thought, SOMEBODY HAS TO WRITE THAT.

And lo! But you did all of them, and it's BRILLIANT.

I think the twins' may be my favorite, but the last was marvelous too. AS WAS DEL'S AND BARNABAS'.

I, I, I'm pretty speechless with glee over this. YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY.

I know - the connections are pretty astonishing. As soon as I recalled the connection between the whole Doctor Destiny/Morpheus/Arkham thing...yeah. I got up in the middle of the night just to pull half a dozen of the Sandman books off my shelf and scrawl an outline for this.

Thank you very much!

Oh man. Ohhhhh man. I really really enjoyed that. The voices were perfect-- I think my favorite lines were "my money's on the clown" and anything Del said ever, but they were all wonderful-- and Death being kind! Or something!

... Though I do have this worry that the longer I spend in Batfandom, the closer I get to becoming certifiably insane. Speaking of cracked.

I tend to be suspicious of crossovers and only read them if I trust the author completely - this means I do trust you, and wasn't disappointed. This was masterfully done. The voice is perfectly in keeping with the Sandman canon and the characterisations are rounded and plausible; I could easily believe this being a canon sidestory.

I don't know how you manage to write such top-notch pieces at such an impressive pace, always more than doing justice to the premise. Thank you for another wonderful read!

I don't do crossovers very often to begin with; as a rule, I don't tend to read them myself unless it's a case in which I blink, say, "Wow, that's actually a no-brainer!" and generally end up glad I did it.

I really enjoyed this. I've read some Sandman in my time, so this was pretty easy for me to follow. I like the speculation that goes on from all the different endless and their different pov's on J/B's relationship. I also like the idea of their destiny being more or less mapped out. Cool! Thanks for this! =)

Oh God! It's like if chocolate and peanut butter got married and had a child: utter perfection. The Endless are so difficult to write, what with being so removed from human emotion and all, but you've captured each one perfectly here. And your image of Bruce's utter exhaustion broke my heart.

I normally hate crossovers, but cos it's you, I clicked to read.. and GUH, loved it completely and totally. The two fandoms just meshed into one complete entity that I think should really be inserted into a nolanverse thing to be released officially, because wow. Just.. wow.

I confess to knowing next to nothing about Sandman, but I likened the Endless to Greek gods (am I on the right track?) and I had no trouble following. In fact, I greatly enjoyed the concept of this. I'd like to think that such a pair as Joker and Batman would certainly entertain / amuse / interest such higher beings. Nicely done. :)

Hmm, totally not familiar with Sandman, though after this I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to check it out!

Although I don't know a thing of these characters it was still an interesting read! Very mythological with all of the observations and things. It was a unique perspective to have Batman and the Joker so detached from things, and as always you did it well/focused on interesting aspects of them.

I'll have to reread this once I've got a better familiarity with both series!

Oh, this crossover works ridiculously well. I love every section, although Companions is perhaps my favourite (well, I just love Delirium, and you write her very well...). People-parts in a pretty dead rainbow across the sky! Lovely. And bats in the belfry? Perfecto.

However, Death's I think they want each other made me squeal with glee. She knows it!

In conclusion: massive love. I need to re-read Sandman pronto.

I'm reading all the Sandman comics now, and I'm up to World's End. It and Batman are my favorite comic series, so I'm so pleased to see the crossover. Quite lovely, and I think you captured their voices really well. Gaiman already did a sort of Batman/Sandman crossover with Doctor Doom/Arkham, so this is quite plausible in my eyes.

Well done!

Stop being so dazzling dammit, it's getting hard to see! Really though. This was definitely the whip cream and nuts on top of the already delightful sundae that is your collection of TDK fanfiction.

You made Destiny change his direction. That was ominous in and of itself right there. Of course Despair would be more than half in love with Bruce. He's the perfect picture of despair, especially since it's self-inflicted with an all too willing hand. I was surprised though that it was Desire who had a thing for Joker. I can see it, but unusual nonetheless. And another "of course" Destruction and Joker. Helloooo~! Screw it, they were all wonderful and I loved each little segment. Especially the "pretty dead rainbow" part.

Gaiman would be proud of this. His style runs rampant through here, but it's still your own too.

I'd say Delirium is at least a bit interested in the Joker, what with having been looking forward to his fireworks - but then, her attention span tends to be very short; either that or it flits from subject to subject quicker than a blink. For some reason, I was thinking about the Endless during the first viewing of TDK I sat through. I thought, this is all elemental, far bigger than these people acting out these events even realize.

Thanks again, darling. I tip my hat to you.

Oh. My. God. This was fantastic, oddly subtle, and even *better* by you calling the new Dream "Daniel" instead of anything else. So many great lines that fit each endless so well. (My favorite, by a small margin, being Death's: "Humans in stupid costumes with access to complicated equipment and a lot of explosives are usually a recipe for disaster.") Just lovely, all in all.

I think you and crack go well together. Mainly because your crack is so smooth that I take it seriously. ;)

By this late stage in the game (meaning post-1992 or '93, whenever it was that the issue wherein Morpheus went the way of all things ran), I assume Dream to mean Daniel by default, since he has, obviously, taken over! That and I'm very, very fond of him in all his oddness.

You know, I'm not even sure that I thought of this as crackfic when I was writing it, but hey, if it works for you, I'm not going to question ;)

Thank you so much, dear.
